Can I program a new key to my car?

If you already have at least TWO working keys that can start your vehicle, you can use these instructions to program additional keys, once the new key(s) have been cut by a professional.

If you have lost all of your keys or you have only one working key then these instructions will not work.

Read through these instructions and understand them from beginning to end.  Practice them a few times to get the timing right.  Sometimes the vehicle’s timing might be slightly different, so if you’re having trouble programming the new key, vary the timing of these steps.

Self-Programming Instructions:

1. Get the new key(s) cut by a professional automotive locksmith or dealership.

2. Sit in the driver’s seat of your vehicle with your two previously working keys and the new key(s).

3. Insert one of your previously working keys into the ignition and turn it to ON (Do not start the engine), wait for about 5 seconds (until the anti-theft light turns off) and then turn the ignition back to OFF.

4. Within 10 seconds, remove the first previously programmed key, and insert your second previously programmed key into the ignition and turn it to ON (Do not start the engine), wait for about 5 seconds (until the anti-theft light turns off) and then turn the ignition back to OFF.

5. Within 10 seconds, remove the second previously programmed key, and insert your new key into the ignition and turn it to ON (Do not start the engine), wait for about 5 seconds (until the anti-theft light turns off) and then turn the ignition back to OFF.

6. Remove your new key from the ignition.

7. Test all keys (even your previously programmed keys).
